To those who have never had a project professionally mastered, there can be much confusion.  Mastering is a lot more than putting songs in order and spacing them properly. I’ve written dozens of articles on the subject of recording (as the RecTech - copyright Davidson Publications, Inc.) that deal with everything from setup and arrangement to releasing and marketing for “D.I.Y.” bands. The articles on

recording and mastering were always the most popular. Much of the info on these pages is based on those articles. We try to get past some of the “mystery” around mastering in these pages. 

We also get a lot of questions from engineers and bands about mastering - As much as we’d like to answer these questions, time constraints just don’t allow it beyond assisting our clients. HOWEVER - John hosts the new Mastering Forum at www.studioforums.com - It’s a public forum populated by a cross-section of recording artists from “newbies” to professionals. Posting a question on the boards is one of the best ways to get the answers your looking for - whether it’s opinions on gear or specific questions about the mastering process. Registering is quick (and free) and you can keep your e-mail private. This “internet” thing is pretty cool!
